New Waste Bin installed at Karmad Gate and the Progress so far

From President, K A Chengappa:

I would like to highlight our achievements in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve over the last three Years.

At first we installed Board and simultaneously did a clean up drive and collected quite a bit of plastic and rubbish.

Secondly , we designed a gate pass to be handed over to all the commutes mainly to bring in awareness about the fragile forest and to educate people about littering and it’s danger to the fragile forest.

And finally we installed Mesh bins with sign board at all the entrance leading inside Nagrahole TR , to initiate a complete plastic free drive.

In past months I have been doing my rounds frequently and in the past two weekend , I could see a whale of changes and it was so satisfying to see that our progress towards a possible plastic free zone has caught on & achieved , the forest is now clean with Zero littering, despite a huge number of traffic footfall this Christmas weekend, which is estimated to be around thousand Vehicles, there’s absolutely no littering inside the forest roads.
I would equally give credit to the Director Mr Harsha Kumar to have agreed for this initiative and has given us all his support in making this drive a success story thus far & also our constant efforts, visits & persistence in motivating the guards/ keepers at the gates to do their best to see that the vehicle are thoroughly checked before allowing them inside.

Further, I insist that we all committee members, at least once ,visit Nagrahole TR , to show our strength and to see & to believe the work that we have achieved and motivate the people there to work towards a better forest management.

The next Big challenging is to make Thitimathi forest a plastic free forest.! I think together with numbers we can definitely make it happen, all it needs is commitment.

Riverine System Management

The Cauvery is one of south India’s most sacred rivers. Swollen by the monsoon rains, it flows for some 475 miles through the state of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu before discharging into the Bay of Bengal. Regulated by dams, it is no longer a wild river, but is home to the legendary ‘Fish of the Gods’ and the ‘King Of All Fishes’ – the Mahseer. Angled for since the times of royalty and the rods of the British Raj, the Mahseer has carved a place for itself in sport fishing legend. It is known as a tiger in waters, because of the fight it musters to wriggle off the hook.

The CWS conducts licensed fishing on a 28km stretch of the river Cauvery in Coorg. The stretch has been leased by CWS from the fisheries dept since 1982. The CWS has also undertaken a lot of efforts in conserving this stretch and improving the fishery substantially.
Anglers can procure angling licenses from the CWS office in Madikeri. For more details please contact the office.

The fishing cottage, located in Valnur on our leased river stretch has been beautifully and aesthetically refurbished recently. The cottage has been painted with earthly colors keeping in
mind its close proximity to the river and the forest. The roof work needed to be replaced after the unprecedented monsoon of the past few years. The cottage now has a permanent tiled roof. The
area surrounding the cottage has been leveled. The rest room has running water. The cottage provides comfortable accommodation for seasoned anglers. It has a picturesque view
